Things That Make Me Screech

I’m calling you into my world on this 29th day of March 2026 at a moment when experiences are consolidating and beginning to reveal their true meaning. That’s what’s driving me to write, share, and exchange.

This publication ties together the seemingly incongruent: expat life in rural France, food & drink, small business management, international politics, the analogue resurgence, side hustles. But if these are the spheres that I fill with my thoughts and effort, why not? Let’s break the algorithm and give respect to coherence revealed over time. I’m confident that the threads to be woven together will become apparent in my early posts.

Similarly, I prefer to be indirect in revealing the seemingly incongruent Me over time. Since I plan to post relatively frequently, I’m sure that lapse of time will be brief. After all, what’s a post without that human dimension.

My Context

I’ll throw things out there. If the only echo comes back off the surrounding mountains, that’s still good enough for me. And because a picture speaks a thousand words, here is the view from the window of my home office as I write these words About this publication.

My Commitment

I commit to creating all of my content (text, photos, illustrations, videos, …), without relying on AI. Please don’t read this as criticism of AI, which I embrace as a tool (some would say a ‘partner’) in many aspects of my work and leisure activities. But I don’t foresee AI having much of a role to play in the kind of content I plan to share with you here. As a matter of policy, I’ll point out wherever AI played any role in creating content that I’ve I shared with you in this publication.

Why Subscribe?

To the extent possible, I aim to make this publication interactive by personally reacting to direct messages and references to what I post. I grew up in the age of pen pals, and finding new pen pals here really appeals. Please follow me and share my posts to help spread my word. Anyone who actually becomes a paid subscriber* and reaches out becomes a true Pen Pal. That’s right: you will receive a hand-written note with a thoughtful reply to a direct message, posted from France. Here’s hoping I’ll be able to weed out the trolls and bots.

* Paid subscriptions will be opened once I’ve shared enough here worth paying for. In the meantime, please look out for my posts and feel free to engage.

Californian in the French Pyrenees. My call is loud and my view is clear — on rural life, entrepreneurship, restaurant management, the analogue renaissance, side hustles.
